Having been a journalism major at the University of Georgia, I am quite familiar with deadlines. In fact, I generally thrive on them.

So when I received an e-mail from Miss LaLa (of Miss LaLa’s Community Arts Centre & Miss LaLa’s Treehouse) requesting that I turn around a half-page ad for her in a day with zero previous knowledge of her business, okay… I’ll admit there was a touch of panic.

[However, I was thrilled to have received a referral from my good friends at the Cobb Symphony Orchestra!]

Regardless, I accepted her challenge and began working immediately. She wanted to change her image to suit an older audience, so I tried to keep that in mind as I perused her Web site.

There was quite a lot of information to include, seeing as she has recently moved to a new location and wanted to reach out to a new community of people.

It was a challenge to get all that text arranged in such a way that the ad did not look cluttered (and I’m not convinced that I fully succeeded in that endeavor), but the ad below is what resulted:

I’m not entirely satisfied with it, but hey–a deadline is a deadline. And most importantly, the client seemed pleased.

Luckily Miss LaLa and I are planning to continue working together on her community advertisements, so I will have a chance to really show her (and of course you, my dear readers) what I’ve got to offer.

Live and learn.

After a long day at work and nice dinner with my boyfriend, I arrived home this afternoon to a lovely surprise:

Sitting on the kitchen table with my name and address printed on the side was the Cobb Symphony Orchestra 2009/2010 Season Brochure that I designed earlier this summer.

At first, I thought perhaps my mother had printed out a version, but as soon as I felt that high-gloss paper, I knew.

It was a bit odd to see those same pages I’ve stared at for weeks and know that they’re being sent to mailboxes all over the community.

Of course being the perfectionist that I am, I immediately went through the whole thing again to check (again) for typos and misaligned design elements.

One set of lines could have been moved up a little, out of the printed area, but overall, I was very pleased with my work.

For the past few months, I have been volunteering at the Cobb Symphony Orchestra–a local non-profit right down the road from my house. Convenient and tons of fun! The people are great, and they let me play around with designing promotional materials for print and online.

My latest project has focused around the rotating banner ad found on the newly redesigned CSO home page. I have created a number of these Web banners to be included in the rotation, advertising the shows in the symphony’s 2009/2010 season.

Now I can officially say that my designs have been published on the Web!
